Zimbabwe Independence Day means nothing to Zimbabweans
April 18 is supposed to be an important annual celebration day for Zimbabweans; because that is the date we got independent from the British rule. But the day is however a non-event to Zimbabweans, especially for those in exile. Oppression simply changed colour. The oppressors became black and indigenous.
The oppressor is now more brutal than Brutus to an extent that a third of the nation’s population fled Zimbabwe to scavenge in foreign countries. Those who are still in Zimbabwe have been coerced into involuntary fasting, except for those who are connected in one way or another to Zanu PF fat cats. So what exactly is the need for celebration? Nothing, zero, zilch!
Zanu PF visited upon Zimbabwe one of the worst forms of human rights abuses in modern day period to an extent that Zimbabweans should rather curse the day former gorillas moved from the bush into State Offices and Mercedes Benz vehicles. Power slipped into murderous hands and this needs no celebration at all. Instead we are mourning here in Diaspora.
However one historical fact which needs to be pointed out is that Zanu PF never solely liberated Zimbabwe. Zimbabweans liberated themselves. Some of the War Veterans who heroically confronted white oppression are now in MDC. This is a fact. The Zanu PF narrative of the liberation struggle is corrupted.
